Executive Summary
Jason Trevisan runs CarGurus, the Boston-based automotive marketplace that is the most-visited car shopping site in the United States and operates marketplaces in the UK and Canada alongside the PistonHeads and Autolist brands. He is an unusual chief executive in that he came to the job through the finance seat rather than product or sales: hired as CFO in September 2015, he took the company public in 2017, added responsibility for the international business in 2020, and succeeded founder Langley Steinert as CEO in January 2021. That financial grounding has been literal as well as temperamental — since March 2025 he has personally carried the company’s principal financial and accounting officer duties on an interim basis, a load he sets down when a permanent CFO joins in October 2026. His stated strategic priority is turning what is still fundamentally a listings marketplace into a multi-product platform for dealers and consumers.

Professional Journey
Trevisan took a bachelor’s degree at Duke University and an MBA at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, and began his career in consulting at Bain & Company. He moved into digital advertising at aQuantive — the Seattle company later bought by Microsoft — working in analytics and client services during the period when performance marketing was first becoming a measurable discipline.
In September 2003 he joined Polaris Partners, the Boston venture capital firm, and stayed twelve years, rising to General Partner. Venture investing taught him the pattern-matching that underlies a marketplace business — where network effects come from, what makes a two-sided market defensible — and it kept him inside the Boston technology ecosystem in which CarGurus was then growing.
He joined CarGurus itself in September 2015 as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. The central event of that tenure was the company’s 2017 initial public offering on Nasdaq, and the organisational build-out that follows any private company becoming a public one: reporting discipline, investor communication, and the internal controls a listed marketplace needs. In January 2020 he added the President of International role, taking charge of the UK and Canadian marketplaces and the PistonHeads community, and a year later the board named him chief executive, succeeding founder Langley Steinert effective January 2021.
The years since have combined two jobs more often than one. In March 2025, following the departure of CFO Elisa Palazzo, Trevisan was appointed interim Principal Financial Officer, Principal Accounting Officer and Treasurer, and he held those duties alongside the chief executive role for more than eighteen months. In September 2026 CarGurus announced Matthew Mandel, previously CFO and COO of the fleet software company Fleetio, as Chief Financial Officer effective 19 October 2026 — describing the appointment in terms of the company’s stated ambition of growing its marketplace into a multi-product platform.
