Williams earned a Bachelor of Engineering at Vanderbilt University and joined Exxon in April 1987 as a drilling engineer in New Orleans. His early roles included operations management for Gulf Coast and offshore California properties, operations superintendent for East Texas fields, U.S. upstream planning, deputy production manager for South China Sea operations in Malaysia, and oversight of North Slope and Cook Inlet interests in Alaska.
