Bates began his career in wealth management at Smith Barney before moving to Morgan Stanley, and joined Wells Fargo Advisors in 2014. In November 2024, he moved his practice to Seventy2 Capital Wealth Management’s independent Financial Network unit, based in Westport, Connecticut, bringing along his longtime Wealth Associates, Summer Gigliotti and Jennifer Caprio, with whom he had worked for more than a decade. At the time of the move, he was reported to be overseeing approximately $445 million in client assets.

At Seventy2 Capital, Bates works with a broad range of clients across the socioeconomic and age spectrum, focused on helping them understand their wealth and deploy it responsibly toward long-term goals. He holds an MBA with concentrations in Corporate Finance and Economics from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a BS in Political Science from Marist College.

Outside of his advisory practice, Bates is active in the performing arts community: he curated a live music series that raised funds for Edmond Town Hall in Newtown, Connecticut, for nearly ten years, and serves on the Board of Directors for the 1867 Opera House Theater in Newport, Rhode Island.
