Advertising technology — sell-side programmatic advertisingUnited Kingdom20+ years experience

Emma Newman is Chief Revenue Officer for EMEA at PubMatic, the programmatic advertising technology company, a role she has held since August 2019. She joined PubMatic in 2014 to run international marketing, moved across into a commercial role leading the UK — the company's largest market outside the United States — and then took the region. Her career before that was built at Microsoft's MSN, AOL and Clear Channel UK, and she is one of the more visible advocates in British ad tech for both carbon reduction in the supply chain and for women working in it.

Executive Summary

Emma Newman runs PubMatic’s revenue organisation across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. PubMatic sits on the sell side of programmatic advertising — the infrastructure through which publishers make their inventory available to automated buyers — which makes the EMEA role a matter of publisher relationships, regulatory divergence and, increasingly, the environmental cost of the ad supply chain. Newman has been at the company since 2014 and has had four jobs inside it, arriving to run international marketing and moving across into commercial leadership of the UK, PubMatic’s largest market outside the United States, before taking the region in August 2019. She is a notably public figure in British ad tech, with two causes she presses on consistently: cutting carbon out of programmatic advertising, and making the industry survivable for women in it.

  • Drove the development of carbon-reducing advertising products and pushed for supply-chain emissions auditing, aligning PubMatic’s strategy with net-zero commitments.
  • Has spoken publicly about juggling a career with family life and about working through the menopause, and has set up support networks for female colleagues.
  • Ten years at Microsoft’s MSN, latterly heading business excellence across EMEA.
  • Senior Director of UK Marketing at AOL, where she built both the commercial and consumer marketing teams.
  • Part of the team that launched the Huffington Post in EMEA.
  • Marketing Director and board member at Clear Channel UK during its move into digital.

Professional Journey

Newman’s career runs almost exactly alongside the commercial internet in Britain. She spent around a decade at Microsoft’s MSN, beginning in marketing and ending as head of its business excellence function across EMEA — a move from communications into operations that set the pattern for the rest of her career, which has alternated between the two. She then joined AOL as Senior Director of UK Marketing, building both its commercial and consumer marketing teams, and was part of the group that launched the Huffington Post in EMEA.

From there she took a board seat at Clear Channel UK as Marketing Director, helping drive the out-of-home advertising business through its transition into digital — a different kind of media, but the same underlying problem of converting an analogue inventory business into an addressable one.

She joined PubMatic in 2014 as Senior Director of International Marketing and was promoted to Vice President of International Marketing. The decisive move came when she took a commercial role as VP, UK, running the company’s largest market outside the United States. Announcing her promotion to Chief Revenue Officer, EMEA in September 2019, then Chief Commercial Officer Jeff Hirsch said she had “consistently proved herself to be a highly effective executive, with an unrelenting drive to succeed.” Her own comment was characteristically about the team rather than the title: she looked forward to “working with and supporting the Regional Directors to drive growth.”

Two things have marked her tenure beyond the commercial numbers. The first is sustainability. Programmatic advertising carries a real and until recently unmeasured carbon cost, spread across the many intermediaries a single impression passes through. Newman has pushed for supply-chain emissions auditing and has driven the development of carbon-reducing advertising products at PubMatic, tying the company’s strategy to net-zero commitments — and has pursued the subject academically as well, through executive study in business sustainability management.

The second is the position of women in an industry she has described as male-dominated. As a mother working in ad tech, she has spoken publicly about the things that usually go unsaid — the mechanics of combining a career with family life, and working through the menopause — and has established support networks for female colleagues. That work is what the Campaign Inspiring Women Awards shortlisted her for. Asked once what she considered her greatest achievement, her answer was staying relevant in digital for more than two decades, which, given how much of the industry she has outlasted, is less modest than it sounds.

Education

No degree or academic qualification could be established. Her promotion announcement, her conference and trade-press profiles, her awards citation and a long-form interview all give none. She has undertaken executive study in business sustainability management at the University of Cambridge; that is a professional development programme rather than a degree, and is described here rather than recorded as a qualification.
