Executive Summary

Elliot Shmukler spent fifteen years as one of the most effective growth product leaders in consumer technology — he is the person who ran LinkedIn’s expansion from 20 million to over 200 million members — and then started a company about something almost nobody outside a data team finds interesting: whether the numbers in the warehouse are actually right. Anomalo, which he co-founded with former Instacart colleague Jeremy Stanley, uses machine learning to monitor enterprise data at scale and flag anomalies without anyone having to write rules for them in advance. The problem is one he hit personally while running growth at Instacart, where every decision rested on dashboards whose underlying data could quietly break. The company has since raised more than $70 million, counts Discover Financial and BuzzFeed among its customers, and has repositioned itself around a sharper version of the same argument: that AI agents acting on enterprise data make silent data corruption far more dangerous than it used to be.

Career Highlights

  • Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Anomalo, with Jeremy Stanley as co-founder and Chief Scientist.
  • Anomalo has raised more than $70 million, including a $33 million growth round announced in January 2024 led by SignalFire, with Databricks Ventures joining as a strategic investor alongside Norwest Venture Partners, Two Sigma Ventures and Foundation Capital.
  • Led the strategy and execution behind LinkedIn’s growth from 20 million to more than 200 million members.
  • As Senior Director of Product Management at LinkedIn, oversaw much of the consumer product experience including Profile, Search, Endorsements and People You May Know.
  • Chief Growth Officer of Instacart, responsible for growth and geographic expansion.
  • Vice President of Product and Growth at Wealthfront.
  • Board member of Farmer’s Business Network (FBN).

Professional Journey

Shmukler studied computer science at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude, and began in engineering as a software design engineer at Microsoft. His early career ran through the first internet generation — Sombasa Media and About.com — before he moved to eBay as a senior product manager. He took an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar, and came out of it pointed at product rather than engineering.

LinkedIn made his reputation. As Senior Director of Product Management he owned much of the consumer experience — Profile, Search, Endorsements, People You May Know — during the period the network grew from 20 million members to more than 200 million. That work made him one of the reference names in the growth-hacking discipline as it professionalised, and he has been a frequent public teacher of it since, in podcasts, conference talks and written essays.

He applied the same discipline in two very different settings. At Wealthfront, the automated investment service, he was Vice President of Product and Growth, writing publicly on the company’s blog about acquisition and retention in a category where trust is the binding constraint. At Instacart he rose to Chief Growth Officer, responsible for growth and geographic expansion across a marketplace with three sides to balance — customers, shoppers and retailers — and unusually punishing unit economics.

Instacart is also where the idea for his own company came from, and where he met his co-founder. Jeremy Stanley had been Instacart’s data science leader; both had watched high-stakes decisions rest on data whose correctness nobody could continuously guarantee. Anomalo was built to close that gap, using machine learning to learn what normal looks like in a table and to surface deviations automatically, rather than depending on hand-written expectations that no team has time to maintain. The company raised through 2021 and 2022 and announced a $33 million growth round in January 2024, led by SignalFire, with Databricks Ventures coming in as a strategic investor — a meaningful signal given how much enterprise data now sits on Databricks. Shmukler has also served on the board of directors of Farmer’s Business Network.
