Cordani earned a BBA at Texas A&M University and an MBA at the University of Hartford. He joined Cigna in 1991 and held senior roles including Senior Vice President of Customer Segments and Marketing and President of Cigna HealthCare.

He became President and Chief Operating Officer in June 2008 and Chief Executive Officer in December 2009, and joined the board in 2009. He was appointed Chair in January 2022. On 1 July 2026 Brian Evanko succeeded him as chief executive and he became Executive Chair.
