Professional Journey
Boone studied commerce at McMaster University and later completed an MBA jointly through Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and York University’s Schulich School of Business.
He spent 16 years at Loblaw Companies, which Michaels describes as Canada’s largest retailer. There he led the National Wholesale Club Division and worked on merchandising strategy across several of the group’s business units. He then moved into retail finance at TD Bank USA, in leadership roles aimed at growing the financial services the bank provided to major U.S. retailers.
His first chief executive role was at Staples Canada, which he led for six years. Michaels credits him with redefining the chain’s retail experience, broadening its merchandise, and scaling its services and business-to-business operations through acquisitions and partnerships. He then served as interim CEO of Essendant, a distributor combining wholesale, e-commerce and third-party logistics.
In February 2025 The Michaels Companies announced his appointment as Chief Executive Officer, effective 28 February, together with a seat on the board. Board chairman Andrew Jhawar described him as a leader with “the strategic vision, customer focus and vast retail experience to continue to drive Michaels forward”. The company operates as a private business: it was delisted from Nasdaq and deregistered with the SEC in April 2021.
