Professional Journey
Woodard founded SageNet in Tulsa in the spring of 1998. It began as a regional firm designing and managing local and wide area networks, and over time became a managed services provider for enterprises with many locations. Reflecting on the company’s 25th anniversary in 2023, he said the aim from the start had been to build an organisation that made a positive impact on its customers, its communities and its associates.
Acquisitions shaped the business. In August 2013, as SageNet’s President, he announced the purchase of Spacenet, the Gilat Satellite Networks subsidiary that had designed and managed large satellite communications networks for US businesses and government agencies since 1981. He called it “a marriage of two exceptional companies” and set the goal of creating North America’s premier managed network services provider. The deal added satellite connectivity to SageNet’s terrestrial networks.
By early 2021 he was SageNet’s CEO, and in February of that year he signed the agreement under which SageNet bought Convergent, a Georgia-based digital signage business, from Ballantyne Strong. He argued that the digital signage market was fragmented, with many vendors but few offering turnkey solutions, and that the combined company could give customers everything needed for a complete digital experience. Digital signage has since become one of SageNet’s three main service lines, alongside network and satellite services.
In July 2021, in what he called the latest step in SageNet’s “steady evolution”, Woodard appointed Brad Wise, who had been President for about eight years, as CEO, named John Meek to a new Chief Operating Officer role, and became Chairman himself. In that role he continues to meet key customers, advise the leadership team on SageNet’s long-term goals and lead its strategic acquisitions. He is also listed, with SageNet, among Commerce Bank’s Tulsa board members in Commerce Bancshares’ 2025 annual report.
