Professional Journey
Castles co-founded Telestream in 1998 in Nevada City, California, and was its first chief executive. The company built its name on file-based video transcoding and workflow automation. When Genstar Capital agreed to acquire it in January 2015, Castles described Telestream as “the undisputed leader in file-based transcoding and workflow software”. Genstar, for its part, said the company had “posted profitable growth since its founding”.
He stepped back in 2017, and Scott Puopolo, who had come from Cisco, succeeded him. The break did not last long. In February 2020 Telestream announced that Puopolo was stepping down and that Castles would return as CEO. Genstar’s managing director, Eli Weiss, said the firm was “excited to have Dan rejoin Telestream to help drive its growth strategy.” Trade press put his combined leadership at more than 22 years by the time he retired again in April 2023.
In December 2024 he returned a third time. With him came several former senior executives in EVP roles: Mark Wronski and Charlie Dunn in product, Anna Greco in customer experience and Jennifer Fehrmann in finance, and Sarah Klose was named EVP of Human Resources. Castles described it as “a return to basics, as we navigate the many challenges and dynamics our markets present.” Under his leadership in 2026 the company pushed into AI-assisted workflows, cloud services and IP-based test and measurement, and its Pulse platform won a 2026 NAB Product of the Year award.
In May 2026 Telestream’s board named Benjamin Desbois, its Chief Growth and Strategy Officer and a former executive at Backlight, Avid and Dalet, as the next CEO, effective 1 July 2026. Castles stayed CEO until the handover and then became Executive Chair of the Board. “I am confident he is the right person to lead the company forward,” Castles said, “and I look forward to supporting him and the team in my role as Executive Chair.” Telestream’s leadership page now lists Desbois as CEO.
