Professional Journey

Burmeister’s career has been built almost entirely within one product lineage. He joined Algorithmics on the quantitative side, as Head of Quantitative Research & Financial Engineering, which placed him at the mathematical core of the risk engine rather than in general software management. From there he moved through Vice President of Risk Solutions and Head of Cloud Solutions to Chief Technology Officer — a progression from the models, to the commercial packaging of the models, to the infrastructure they run on, and finally to the whole technology organisation.

That span matters because Algorithmics itself changed hands twice during it. The business was owned by IBM before SS&C Technologies acquired it in 2018, and the shift from an IBM product portfolio to an SS&C one brought different commercial pressures and a different customer base. His Head of Cloud Solutions period coincides with the industry’s move of risk computation off client premises, a transition he has since described as only half finished: firms adopted cloud infrastructure three to five years ago, he argues, but have not yet adopted a cloud operating mindset for the software running on it.
