Professional Journey

Hanson studied finance at Florida State University and joined Covidien in October 1992. According to Zimmer Biomet’s 2020 proxy, he held a series of sales, marketing and general management roles there before becoming President of the Energy-based Devices business in July 2006. From 2011 he was a Senior Vice President and Group President, first of the Surgical Solutions business, then of Medical Devices and the United States, and from October 2014 as Senior Vice President and Group President, Covidien. In January 2015 he became Executive Vice President and President of Medtronic’s Minimally Invasive Therapies Group in January 2015.

In December 2017 he became President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Zimmer Biomet, the orthopaedics company. He held the role until 2023, when he moved to 3M as Chief Executive Officer of its Health Care Business Group, the unit 3M was preparing to spin off.

The spin-off completed on 1 April 2024. Solventum began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as SOLV with Hanson as CEO, Wayde McMillan as CFO and Carrie Cox as board chair. It started out with four segments: Medical Surgical, Dental Solutions, Health Information Systems, and Purification and Filtration. Hanson has since run what the company calls a three-phase transformation strategy. The first large step was selling Purification & Filtration to Thermo Fisher Scientific for $4.0 billion in cash, which closed on 2 September 2025. In October 2025 he created a Chief Commercial Officer role, reporting to him, to oversee global commercial and R&D operations across MedSurg, Dental Solutions and Health Information Systems.

On 5 August 2026 Solventum announced it would pursue a separation of Health Information Systems, its healthcare software business with $1.4 billion in annual sales, used by more than 75% of US hospitals. “We have moved with urgency to advance portfolio optimization, a core pillar of our transformation strategy,” Hanson said. The company said the move would make Solventum a more dedicated MedTech company focused on MedSurg and Dental Solutions.

Outside his executive roles, he was a director of Walgreens Boots Alliance from 2022 to 2025. Zimmer Biomet’s 2020 proxy also listed him as a director of Americares, the emergency response and global health organisation.
