Professional Journey

Engel trained as an accountant at The University of Texas at Austin, where she earned both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master of Professional Accountancy.

Her first public-company CFO role came in February 2008 at A.H. Belo Corporation, the Dallas-based owner of The Dallas Morning News. She served as its chief financial officer and treasurer until December 2014, and the company has since been renamed DallasNews Corporation. In January 2015 she became CFO and treasurer of Gannett Co., Inc., the publishing company that owns USA TODAY and a large network of local newspapers, and held that post until April 2020.

After Gannett she moved to software. From January 2023 to August 2024 she was chief financial officer of LeaseAccelerator, Inc., a software-as-a-service company.

Spire Global announced her appointment on 24 March 2025, effective 1 April. She took over from interim CFO Thomas Krywe, and the company said she would be based at its Vienna, Virginia headquarters. Chief executive Theresa Condor said at the time that Engel had “a strong track record of steering companies through complex challenges in rapidly evolving industries.” Spire was founded in 2012 and went public in 2021 through a merger with the special purpose acquisition company NavSight Holdings. It operates a satellite constellation that observes the Earth using radio-frequency technology. At the time of her appointment, its data products covered weather intelligence, ship and plane movements, and spoofing and jamming detection, and it also offered space services.

Her first months in the role were eventful. On 25 April 2025 Spire completed the sale of its maritime data business to Kpler Holding SA for about $238.9 million. According to the company, part of the proceeds went to settle a dispute with L3Harris and to repay its Blue Torch and Strategic Innovation Fund loan facilities. Spire then filed late-filing notices for its second- and third-quarter 2025 reports, naming Engel as the contact and citing the extra accounting work the sale required. Spire’s April 2026 proxy statement still lists her as Chief Financial Officer. She signed the company’s reports in that capacity through August 2026, including the second-quarter 2026 results filing.
